The Weissach-developed and built vehicle will race in international championships which run in accordance with FIA GT3 regulations. In contrast to the 911 GT3 Cup, the body of the Cup S is not based on the road-going GT3 but on the GT3 RS. Several suspension components for the GT3 Cup S have been taken from the more powerful 911GT3 RSR.

The GT3 Cup S, based on the road-going GT3 RS sportscar, is created exclusively for racing purposes. The vehicle will race in international championships which run in accordance with FIA GT3 regulations.

To a large extent, the 3.6-litre boxer engine is identical to the power unit used in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup and the international Carrera Cup championships. Power output has increased by 20 horsepower to now 440 hp (324 kW) at 8,000 rpm. Maximum torque is up by ten Nm to 430 at 7,250 revs per minute. The power increase results from optimised engine electronics and a modified exhaust system.

The body of the Cup S is based on the GT3 RS. In the wider wheel arches, considerably larger wheels can now be mounted. At the front, the rims measure 10.5 inches in width with 12 inch wheels fitted at the rear. The front section and flares are significantly different to the GT3 Cup components. An adjustable front-splitter generates more downforce at the front axle. The rear-wing is wider and positioned higher than the Cup version and provides more downforce at the rear axle.

Several suspension components for the GT3 Cup S have been taken from the more powerful GT3 RSR which races in the GT2 class at international long-distance championships. The braking system of the GT3 Cup S was adjusted to the increased power compared to the GT3 Cup. At the rear the diameter of the brake discs has grown by five millimetres to now measure 355 mm.

2009 GT3 RS Cup S With Porsche's introduction of the GT3 RS, many thought this was their idea of a street-going race car. But now comes the GT3 RS Cup S, a true track monster. The Cup has pretty much the same 3.6 liter boxer engine that is used in the Carrera Cup championships and the Mobil 1 supercup. With 440hp at 8000 rpm and 317lb-ft torque at 7250 rpms this car is more than capable on the track. With 10.5 in. wide wheels in the front, 12in wide wheels in the back, and a rear spoiler taller than some kids, grip and downforce are not a problem. On the track is where this car will truly shine, as the suspension is more than likely way too stiff for daily driving. So for the car enthusiast looking for that weekend track car that will satisfy all his or her racing desires, the Cup S is perfect car for them. The only thing that may come in the way is the $362000 price tag, 2.5 times that of the GT3RS. Porsche currently offers fifteen road-going variations on the 911 theme. With coupes, targas and convertibles; rear- and all-wheel-drive; normal aspiration and turbocharging; and an array of higher-horse S models, it should be easy for any Goldilocks to find the right type-997. If your penchant for Porsche should move you to the track, options have until now been limited (relatively speaking) to the GT3 Cup and GT3 RSR. For 2009, Porsche will offer a GT3 Cup S which slots somewhere in between the two. The car is designed to compete in accordance with FIA GT3 regulations. Building on the 2007 GT3 Cup, the Cup S adds some details from the GT3 RS road car. The wider RS bodywork means more room for rubber underneath. Tires measuring10.5 inches wide up front and 12 inches in the rear are mounted on three-piece, 18-inch BBS alloy wheels with center locks. An adjustable front splitter and a wider rear wing increase downforce versus the non-S Cup car. Bigger tires and aero aids should help the GT3 Cup S put its extra power to the tarmac. The 3.6-liter flat-six engine gets optimized engine electronics and a modified exhaust system that bring power up to 440 hp (an increase of 20 over the GT3 Cup) while torque measures 317 lb-ft (up 7). Like the GT3 Cup before it, that power is routed through a six-speed sequential gearbox. Brakes were not ignored and have been upgraded to scrub off the extra speed caused by the added grunt. The whole package will cost 250,000 Euro (about $362,000 at current rates). Owners of GT3 Cup cars will be able to purchase a kit to get their machines up to S specs.
